Fighting Words Trip
Date posted: 19-02-2010
On Monday the 15th of February 2010 twenty boys and girls from 5th and 6th class made the journey to Dublin to take part in an excellent Fighting Words workshop. When we arrived we were all given name tags and our photographs were taken. We were then led through a secret door into a great room with books on all walls. Clif went through all the componants of a good story with us and then we set about creating the beginning of our book as a whole group.
First we had to decide what characters were going to be in our story. We decided that the main characters were going to be Ted the Red-Head and Hammy, the giant talking hamburger. Our next task was to figure out where the story was going to take place and to compose a plot. We could all submit ideas, Clif wrote them down and the final decision was made by a secret vote.
Odhran typed the story as we composed it and Clare drew three excellent illustrations which were included in our book.
After we had finished the beginning of the book we split into groups to continue on the stories. Each of the endings were very different and we had great fun listening to each others stories and looking at each others illustrations.
Mrs. McConkey is the publisher at Fighting Words and she's really cranky. She works in the room next to the room that we were in and she shouts a lot. It took a lot of persuading to convince her that the children of Navan Educate Together N.S were good writers and after reading some of the stories she decided (reluctantly) to publish our books. Each of us got a book to take home with the beginning of our story and Clare's illustrations in it. There was also plenty of blank pages in the book for us to fill in our own endings and illustrations. Our photo was printed on the back cover along with space for reviews from critics.
We had a great time at Fighting Words and we would like to thank all the volunteers that helped us create our great book.
